And my mother was one of the most spiritual people I knew, but she didn't raise me in the church. So I came to my Christian faith later in life, and it was because the precepts of Jesus Christ spoke to me in terms of the kind of life that I would want to lead—being my brothers' and sisters' keeper, treating others as they would treat me. I think also understanding that Jesus Christ dying for my sins spoke to the humility we all have to have as human beings, that we're sinful and we're flawed and we make mistakes, and that we achieve salvation through the grace of God. But what we can do, as flawed as we are, is still see God in other people and do our best to help them find their own grace. That's what I strive to do. That's what I pray to do every day. But unlike his contemporaries Keith Haring and Jean- Michel Basquiat, who, as one of the film’s commentators waggishly puts it, each made the “good career move” of dying young, Hambleton squandered his success with a crippling drug addiction. The doc, receiving its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, achieves its goal of shining a spotlight on its subject while delivering a fascinating true- life tale. The film begins with grainy footage, shot late at night on in the Lower East Side in 1. Hambleton quickly painting one of his iconic shadowy figures on a building. We learn that the Canadian- born artist received formal training in Vancouver and made a name for himself with his “Image Mass Murder” series of mock crime scenes featuring outlines of bodies and red paint suggesting blood. He painted these provocative pieces in various cities across the U. S., much to the displeasure of local police departments, before making his way to New York City. Achieving prominence through his “Shadowman” paintings that were ubiquitous in the city’s downtown neighborhoods, Hambleton became a darling of the art world. Hanging out with the likes of Andy Warhol and his new friends Haring and Basquiat, he cut a wide swatch on the social scene, with his handsome looks and stylish fashion sense attracting throngs of adoring women. He basked in his fame, which resulted in a Life magazine cover story and increasing prices for his artworks. At the peak of his commercial success, he left the New York and traveled the world, painting a Shadowman on the Berlin Wall and expanding his style to include landscapes and seascapes. As with many of his downtown contemporaries, he fell victim to addiction, becoming a junkie and frequently reduced to homelessness. His many ailments included scoliosis and skin cancer, for which he refused treatment, with the result that his face became severely deformed. But he never lost his creative urge, sometimes even using his own blood as paint. Even after making a comeback two decades later, he was his own worst enemy, sabotaging his renewed success.“He so self- destructive, but he won’t die,” one of Hambleton’s friends comments. The film relates his tale in compelling if not surprising fashion, using the obligatory Studio 5. Talking Heads, Blondie and The Ramones, among others, to set the scene. Such downtown mainstays as musician Richard Hell and performance artist Penny Arcade, as well as numerous friends and colleagues of Hambleton, provide vivid testimony about his rise and fall. Achieving prominence through his “Shadowman” paintings that were ubiquitous in the city’s downtown neighborhoods, Hambleton became a darling of the art world. It can now be clinically measured that due to the stresses and traumas of our lives, nearly everyone is stuck in a constant state of survival, called fight- or- flight. Fear compels us to respond either with fight or flight reactions, but we can also do nothing, which science calls "freezing.". If you can argue on Facebook about the Muslim/immigration ban, you can call your state legislator and ask him or her what he or she is doing about it. And, once stuck, we are no longer able to function to our fullest potential. History of stress. In the 1. 93. 0's, Harvard physiologist Walter Cannon was the first to coin the term fight- or- flight. He used it to describe our innate defense mechanism in the face of a threat or danger. The classic example is a cave man's physiological response to seeing a tiger in the trees. The imminent danger triggers subconscious reflexes that instantaneously recruit his resources to ensure his survival. His body prepares to fight to the death or flee for his life. Adrenaline and other hormones, like cortisol, are released into his bloodstream. The liver releases stored sugar for an immediate energy boost. Blood flow increases to his brain, heart, lungs and large muscles (at the expense of lower priority functions like digestion, immunity, reproduction, etc). His heart beats faster and his blood pressure rises. His breathing becomes more shallow and rapid to obtain more oxygen. Perspiration increases to keep his body cool. His senses become heightened and his pupils dilate to let in more light. His vision tunes out extraneous peripheral information so he can focus on the tiger, or zero in on his escape route. His muscles become tensed, ready to fight or flee. Donald Trump's search for a secretary of state took him on an ideological tour of the political world he upended, only for him to land basically where he started. What is the Flight or Fight Response? Understanding The Amazing Flight or Fight Response This is a fascinating topic to me since I have experienced. Chaos almost erupted into a fight on American Airlines Flight 591 Friday night after a flight attendant who struck the mother of twins in a struggle for control of a.During the 1. 95. All those primitive reflexes kick in, from the sweaty palms and goose bumps, to the quivering tense muscles and shortness of breath. No, there's no tiger in the audience, but according to our nervous system, there might as well be. Stage 2: The stage of resistance. This stage is what happens when stress occurs over a significant length of time. As world- renowned researcher Bruce Mc. Ewen emphasizes in his book 'The End of Stress as We Know It,' . Intense situations like demanding jobs, rigorous schooling, long- term troubled or dysfunctional relationships, prolonged illnesses or accident rehabilitation. To survive, we somehow find a balance or equilibrium that allows us to function day after day under the pressure. The surge of the alarm reaction is dampened, but our engines are constantly idling in a perpetual low level fight- or- flight. Despite the constant drain on our system, in order to copewe subconsciously redefine this chronically stressful state as normal. As this process repeats itself through life, the cumulative effect over time can be dramatic. We do the best we can, but inevitably we find ourselves functioning less effectively, usually well below our true capabilities. We lose our resilience and without major life style changes, we gradually become more and more susceptible to various stress- related illnesses. Douglas Bremner's book, 'Does Stress Damage the Brain?' He goes on to clearly demonstrate how our . Here's proof: Stop for a moment and take a nice big deep breath. Where does the air go? Did your shoulders rise as most of the air went into your expanded chest? We live stressful lives, and we've come to accept chest- breathing as normal. This is just one sign of being stuck in a chronic state of fight- or- flight. Stage 3: Stage of exhaustion. This is the final stage of Selye's General Adaptation Syndrome. After prolonged stress, the system resources become depleted. This is classic 'burn out,' with fatigue, adrenal exhaustion and a weakened immune system. The physical signs of alarm can reappear and the system shuts down, becomes debilitated and ultimately death may even occur. In his book 'Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers,' Robert Sapolsky presents evidence that it's not the depletion or exhaustion, but the stress response itself, that ultimately causes the body to breakdown. |
